About this

We recently saw your amazing show aboard the Carnival cruise ship, Paradise. We were lucky enough to become personally involved in the performance when you called our 5 year old son, Brady, on stage to participate. It was an awesome and memorable experience for all of us. We just wanted to thank you for such a special night and for making our precious son so happy. By the way, Brady's "Ship on a Stick" did turn into money that night. As I was lying in bed in our stateroom, I heard him rustling around, but didn't speak to him. He checked under his pillow. All of sudden, I hear him say "Oh my gosh. It really happened. I do believe in magic."

by Dave Richards, Staff Writer

George Bailey isn't the only one with a wonderful life. Consider the case of Erie native Bob Borgia, who'll appear at First Night Erie Dec. 31 for two big shows at the Warner Theatre. Four years ago, he was injured in a devastating Los Angeles car accident. Today he's on his way to the big time as an illusionist and master magician.

Borgia stars in "Imagine Nation," an ongoing, $2 million production at the Genting Highlands Resort in Malaysia. At the show's end, he makes an airplane disappear. Food, too. Imagine the standing ovation for that.

In February, he'll appear in two spots during "Madcap Magic," a Pax Network television special.

This past summer, Borgia not only designed all the magic for R&B singer Brian McKnight's concert tour, but traveled on the road with him, too. Audiences saw microphones float in mid-air and McKnight vanish in thin air at the show's end.     More

Bobby BorgiaBobby Borgia Bio part 1

As the little five-year-old sat cross-legged on the living room floor watching a slight-of-hand trick being performed on the television screen in front of him, he knew he just had to become a magician.

So, kindergartner Bobby Borgia started his daily practice of finger exercises, to the surprise and concern of his parents. As fate stepped in he and mom, Louise, happened upon Weber's Trick Store on State Street in Erie Pennsylvania after leaving a dentist's office. His reward was to have been an ice cream soda but a magic coin box was an exciting substitute for the budding illusionist. The applause of his tiny classmates after his first show-and-tell with that coveted coin box became the source of his greatest reward seeing the amazement and joy of his audiences.        continued

magicTypes of magic performance

Magic performances tend to fall into a few specialities or genres.

--Stage illusions are performed for large audiences, typically within an auditorium. This type of magic is distinguished by large-scale props, the use of assistants and often, exotic animals such as elephants and tigers. Some famous stage illusionists, past and present, include Howard Thurston, Chung Ling Soo, David Copperfield, and Siegfried & Roy.

--Cabaret magic, Platform magic or Stand-up magic are terms used to describe magic performed for a medium to large audience. Night club magic and comedy club magic are also examples of this form. The term parlor magic is sometimes used but is considered pejorative. This genre includes the skilled manipulation of props such as billiard balls, card fans, doves, rabbits, silks, and rope. Examples of such magicians include Jeff McBride, Penn and Teller, David Abbott, Channing Pollock, Black Herman, and Fred Kaps.

--Close-up magic is performed with the audience close to the magician, sometimes even one-on-one. It usually makes use of everyday items as props, such as cards and coins (see Coin magic) and seemingly 'impromptu' effects. This is also called "table magic" particularly when performed as dinner entertainment. Ricky Jay and Lee Asher, following in the traditions of Dai Vernon, Slydini and Max Malini, are considered among the foremost practitioners of close-up magic.   More
